Route 56Route 56 Information Try something different when travelling from Cape Town to Durban. Take the scenic Route 56 from Middelburg to Pietermaritzburg. For those who like to travel on gravel stay on the N1 until Richmond and then turn of onto Route 56 towards Middelburg. It is gravel for about 110km to Middelburg. From there tar all the way to Pietermaritzburg. Should you prefer tar all the way turn off towards Murraysburg and then to Graaff Reinet. From there carry on with the N9 to Middelburg.
