Karoo Spoor - Experience the Schoombee Karoo
The Schoombee Karoo is a place of vast grassy plains interspersed with xerophytic shrubs, flat topped hills and majestic mountains. It is also a place filled with “spoor” from the past and the present. On closer examination you will find that the spoor from the past was left by the weird and wonderful creatures from the Permian and Triassic periods, dating back two hundred million years. More recently the spoor was left by the Bushmen that crossed these plains and the early Settlers from the 1800’s.
The Anglo-Boer war followed at the close of the 19th century and the old railway line connecting Rosmead through Schoombee to Burgersdorp.
Today’s “spoor” is of a large variety of birds and animals along the Brak River watercourse that is supplemented lower down by a permanent flow of water thanks to the Orange-Fish River water scheme, and the many visitors that come to enjoy the natural wonder of the Karoo.
Karoo Spoor was developed to offer the visitor a true Karoo Experience. Located in an area called Schoombee, halfway between Middelburg and Steynsburg on the R56. Accommodation in an early 1900's stone cottage (sleeps 6). Self catering or catered. Lapa in Anglo-Boer war blockhouse. Mountain biking and hiking trails can be adapted to suite your personal needs and interest. Featured Accommodation in the Karoo (Click for More Info)
